In short: CaptureRec stores your recordings on your device, needs no account, includes no advertising or analytics SDK, and does not declare Android's internet permission, so the app has no way to send your recordings anywhere.
1. Introduction and scope
This policy covers the CaptureRec Android app (version 1.0.0) and this website, capturerec.roxlabhq.com. CaptureRec is a screen recorder published by RoxLab. When this policy says "we", it means the publisher of CaptureRec.
2. What the app does
CaptureRec captures what is on your screen, and optionally device audio, the microphone and your camera (Facecam), only while you are recording or positioning Facecam. You can also take screenshots and draw on the screen while a recording is running, and edit your videos in the built-in Video Studio. It encodes the video and audio on your device and saves the result as an MP4 file. Core recording does not use a server or any cloud processing.
3. Screen capture consent
CaptureRec uses Android's MediaProjection system. Android asks for your approval every time you start a recording; the app cannot skip or pre-approve that prompt. While capture is active, Android shows its own indicator and CaptureRec shows a notification with Stop and Pause controls. You can stop at any time, including from Android's system controls.
Content that Android protects (for example, DRM-protected video or windows marked secure) cannot be captured, and CaptureRec does not attempt to bypass those protections. Be aware that a recording or screenshot can include anything visible on screen, and the floating toolbar itself if it is expanded, while you record, such as notifications, messages or passwords.
4. Microphone and audio
Audio is optional. If you choose Microphone or Device + microphone, Android asks for the microphone permission and CaptureRec uses the microphone only while a recording is running. Device audio uses Android's audio playback capture (Android 10 and newer); apps can opt out of being captured, and calls and protected content are not captured. Audio is processed on your device and saved inside the recording file. If you choose Muted, no audio track is recorded.
5. Where recordings and data are stored
- Screenshots are saved as PNG files in
Pictures/CaptureRecthrough MediaStore, on your device only. Facecam: when it is on, your camera picture is composited into the video file itself; no separate camera footage is kept and nothing is uploaded. - Video Studio projects are small files stored privately on your device that record which parts of which videos you edited, plus text overlays and settings. They reference your videos; they do not copy or change them. Exports are new MP4 files in
Movies/CaptureRec. Videos and audio files you open in the Studio are read only from the files you choose, and a temporary file may be kept in the app's cache while an export runs and is deleted afterwards. - Recordings are saved on your device in the
Movies/CaptureRecfolder through Android's MediaStore. While a recording is in progress, the file is hidden as a pending item and is published only after it has been verified as playable. A recording that fails is discarded. - App settings (such as quality profile, audio source, theme and library view) are stored privately on your device.
- Local diagnostics shown in the Encoder Lab are stored privately on your device: results of encoder tests and a technical summary of recent recordings (file name, resolution, codec, frame timing, size, and error messages). They are never transmitted.
6. Your control over recordings
You can play, rename, share and delete recordings in the app's library, or manage the files with any file manager or gallery app. Deleting is always an explicit action; CaptureRec does not delete your recordings automatically. If you choose Share, the recording is handed to the app you select through Android's share sheet, and what that app does with it is governed by that app's own policy.
7. Network communications
The app: CaptureRec does not declare Android's INTERNET permission, contains no networking code of its own, and has no server component. Its manifest includes ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE, which is added by a video-playback library the app uses; it only lets an app check whether a connection exists, and CaptureRec does not use it to send data. The "Read the Privacy Policy online" button in the app opens this page in your web browser; that visit is an ordinary web request made by your browser, not by CaptureRec.
This website: The website is static. It sets no cookies, loads no third-party scripts, fonts or trackers, and contains no analytics. Like any website, the hosting provider that serves it may process standard technical request data, such as IP address and request time, in server logs to deliver pages and keep the service secure.
8. Analytics, advertising and tracking
CaptureRec includes no advertising SDK, no analytics SDK, no crash-reporting SDK and no tracking of any kind. There are no accounts, and no advertising identifiers are read.
10. Retention and deletion
Recordings are kept until you delete them. Settings and local diagnostics are kept until you clear the app's storage or uninstall CaptureRec, which removes them. Recordings saved in Movies/CaptureRec are ordinary files in your device's shared storage and may remain after uninstalling until you delete them. Because we receive no data from the app, we hold nothing about you that we could delete on request.
11. Permissions
| Screen capture (MediaProjection) | Granted per recording through Android's system prompt. Required to record the screen. |
|---|---|
| Record audio | Requested only if you choose a microphone mode. |
| Camera | Requested only when you turn Facecam on. Used only while Facecam is active (recording, or on-screen positioning). |
| Display over other apps | Requested only when you turn on the floating toolbar or on-screen Facecam positioning. Used to draw the toolbar and preview; it does not read other apps' content. |
| Notifications | Shows recording status with Pause and Stop controls, and a notice when a recording is saved. Optional. |
| Foreground service (media projection, microphone, camera, special use) | Required by Android to keep recording, the camera and the floating toolbar running while the app is in the background. |
| Network state | Declared by a bundled playback library; not used to transmit data (see section 7). |
The app does not request access to your contacts, location, call logs, SMS or broad file storage.
12. Children's privacy
CaptureRec is not directed to children. Because the app collects no personal information and has no accounts, it does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children.
13. Security limitations
Recordings are ordinary video files protected by your device's own security, such as screen lock and Android's storage protections; CaptureRec does not add its own encryption. Other apps that you have granted access to your device's videos may be able to read them, and anyone with access to your unlocked device can. If the app or device is interrupted, for example by a crash or power loss, an in-progress recording may be lost or unplayable, and CaptureRec cannot guarantee recovery.
14. Changes to this policy
If the app's behaviour changes in a way that affects privacy, this policy will be updated before or when that version is released, and the "Last updated" date above will change. The current version is always available at capturerec.roxlabhq.com/privacy-policy.
15. Contact
Questions about this policy can be sent to the developer using the contact details shown on the CaptureRec page on Google Play.
